Join Us at Labor Day Rally in Hayward
And please donate school supplies
How will you honor workers on Labor Day? First, take a few moments to think about the history and meaning of Labor Day. Next, join us from noon to 1:30 p.m., Monday, September 1, for a “Workers Over Billionaires” rally at the intersection of U.S. 63 and State Highway 27 in Hayward.
The rally is sponsored by Up North Engaged and the Sawyer County and LCO Democratic Party as part of the 50501 movement’s days of action demonstrating support for democracy and opposition to autocracy. Here’s what 50501
says about the Labor Day 2025 Day of Action:
Labor and community are planning more than a barbecue on Labor Day this year because we have to stop the billionaire takeover. Billionaires are converting the government into their private slush fund and just passed the largest wealth
giveaway in the history of the US. The money they take from working families, they put in billionaires’ pockets and set
aside to fund a private army of ICE agents.
The 50501 movement, Up North Engaged, and Sawyer County and LCO Dems offer some demands to build the
society we all deserve:
1. Stop the billionaire takeover corrupting our government.
2. Protect and defend Medicaid, Social Security, Medicare, SNAP and other programs for working people and their
families, as well as veterans and disabled people.
3. Fully fund public schools, healthcare and housing for all—in both rural and urban communities.
4. Stop the attacks on immigrants, black, indigenous, trans people, and all our communities. Follow due process in any arrests of undocumented immigrants—prove that they’re criminals or let them go. Make sure ICE agents are properly vetted—end the private army of masked agents who act like a secret police force.
5. Invest in people not wars—and insist on civil rights for Ukrainian and Palestinian people in any peace negotiations.
The event also includes a school supply drive. Please bring new school supplies to the rally, and organizers will make sure they go to area public schools. Donations are even more important given this news from WisDems:
As Kids Head Back to School, Americans are Feeling the Pinch Caused by the GOP’s Tariff Taxes
In the last week a new poll revealed that over two thirds of of Americans have an unfavorable view on tariffs. This comes at a time when Wisconsin Republicans are standing strong behind the GOP policies, despite the rising costs of goods across the county. Stores like Walmart and Home Depot have noted that they are going to be forced to raise prices as a result of the tariffs.
Rules and practices for the Labor Day rally include:
· Stay on the sidewalks and make way for passersby.
· Dress for the weather and stay hydrated.
· Organizers in orange or yellow vests will answer your questions.
· Organizers also will supply some signs, but you’re welcome to bring your own, homemade signs.
· Be peaceful and friendly to passing vehicles, whatever their occupants’ response.
Important Notes
About signs: We encourage strong, but civil, messages. Express your support for democratic values, norms, and policies and/or your opposition to destructive actions by the Trump regime.
You may sign up for the rally on Mobilize via the 50501 site or via WisDems. Or just show up. A core principle behind all our events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values.
About the Intersection
As of Thursday, August 24, there was considerable lumber and equipment in the parking area on Democracy Corner (U.S. 63 and Wisconsin 27). This material restricts some parking spots, as well as participants’ ability to gather behind the sidewalk east of U.S. 63. If the material is still there on September 1, participants may need to line up on the sidewalks surrounding the former Kwik Trip site.

Wake Up America! Gov. Newsom Explains Election Rigging Response Act
“Americans do not need more obstacles to vote! The SAVE Act would create one more barrier to the voting process as many eligible voters do not have easy access to the necessary documents. ”
Tell Your Senators to Oppose the SAVE Act
The House of Representatives passed the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act for the second time in April 2025. The SAVE Act would require citizenship documentation to register to vote even though voters in every state are already required to affirm or verify their citizenship status when registering. Editor’s Note: Not surprisingly, Tom Tiffany voted for this bill.
Now, the Senate must reject this bill to prevent it from becoming law.
It is already illegal for noncitizens to register and vote in federal or state elections. The bill’s requirement of a document to prove American citizenship to register to vote in federal elections is unnecessary and seeks to divide us. It also creates another barrier to voting.
Many communities of eligible voters would be unnecessarily burdened by the requirements of the SAVE Act. Among them are military voters who would be required to present documentation every time they re-register to vote when their family moves. Families who have been impacted by natural disasters may have lost necessary documentation and would be required to jump through hoops to replace these documents to register to vote while also going through the traumatic process of rebuilding their lives. Additionally, Americans who have changed their name, like married women, would also be required to secure updated documentation to register to vote.
Americans do not need MORE obstacles to vote. The SAVE Act would create one more barrier to the voting process, as many eligible voters do not have easy access to the necessary documents. Compared to white US citizens, citizens of color are three times more likely to lack documents such as birth certificates, passports, naturalization certificates, or certificates of citizenship or face difficulties accessing them. For example, while approximately half of all American adults possess a passport, two-thirds of Black Americans do not.
Tell your Senators to oppose the SAVE Act. See the League of Women Voters website.
